Ergonomics- is an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so the people and things interact most efficiently and safely.

I have an extra bedroom in my home that I have claimed as "my space." This means it is currently so completely cluttered with everyone else's junk that I can't open the door more than a crack. What I envision is a tidy space wherein I can have my sewing and craft supplies, a workspace and my office. The room is about 10 x 10 with a 1.5 x 2 closet and one wall that is all windows. Are my dreams too big, or do you think a multi-function room is possible in this space? Lizzie, Five Forks

Hello Lizzie, a multi-functional space is absolutely possible. It will require editing from quantity to quality. Start by removing items which do not belong in the space. Keep your office and craft sections separate by creating 2 zones within the space. This can usually be done by placing them in opposite sides of the room. When determining the location of your individual spaces keep in mind light, glare, movement of the room, and the primary function of the room.

I have four grandchildren. I love it when they come to visit except for the mess that they make. They leave their toys, games, and balls everywhere. Do you have any suggestions for a fun way to get organized, so that I can visit with my grandchildren without breaking my toe on their rollerblades? Pat, Toano, VA

When organizing for children the most important thing to do is keep it easy, the second is fun if possible. You can make a bin for each of your grandchildren, have them help you decorate it or personalize it to the child keeping it easy for them to get in and out of. The more you can get them involved in the initial process or set up the more likely they will use it on their own. If the bins are overflowing Editing will be required. Once a bin is overfull it is no longer easy.

Can you organize all kinds of space like garages and attics?

Yes, garages and attics are often the most fun. You rediscover a ton of memories and are able to give them a proper home.

Do you provide coaching by phone services to organize kitchen, home office, garage, and living spaces, and what does it Intel?

Yes. It is best to schedule a consultation so I can see the space and have a better understanding of what you are trying to achieve. During the initial consultation we will talk about your vision and goals for the space, I will make a few on the spot recommendations. After an agreement is reached I will provide assistance via phone.

I am contacting organizers in my mom's behalf. How can I get your services for her? Thanks

A Gift Certificate makes a great House warming, Moving, I love you, and Christmas gift. However, for the Professional Organizer or the established organizing system to be successful the person must be willing and wanting to get organized. In short make sure it is something your mom is interested in and will not be offended.

How long does it take to organize a room?

Without looking at a space it is hard to determine the amount of time it will take. It would depend on how cluttered the space is what is in the drawers or the closets, the number of interruptions etc. I can tell you any project should go 3 times faster with a Professional Organizer than it would take you without one.

How can I use a Professional Organizer while on a tight, tight budget?

I am flexible and will work in the manner which best fits your needs. You can purchase a coaching service which is best for the Do It Yourselfers. If you have found that Do-It-Yourself method doesn't work for you, you can purchase a small block of time, I will get you started, assigned homework, and return when you are ready to get to the next step, or to help you over a stumbling block.

I use what you already have, unless something else is necessary and agreed upon. For coaching I can work with you for a bit to get you started assign homework and come back when you get to a point where you need help again. I don't charge shopping or driving fees. I believe in keeping it simple and affordable. To me organization is something you cannot afford not to have.

I am thinking about starting my own company as a Professional Organizer, but I don't know how to go about it. Do you provide any services for people who are interested in becoming a professional organizer?

Yes, I offer a coaching service to new Organizers with advice, spreadsheets to track profit and expense, file systems, and marketing information. I have spear headed organizing the Organizers in the Tidewater Area, and host monthly meetings.

What is your advice for someone just starting out as a Professional Organizer?

Always remember you have been invited into someone's home or business. As an Organizer you should never make someone throw anything away. You help them place value and prioritize what they have; you are successful when your client can make a non emotional decision. Your job is to educate not to offend.

All the piles and clutter are simply postponed decisions. Life gets busy, with out a good organizational system it can be extremely challenging to keep up with daily activities and items coming into your home or work place. When people become emotionally attached to items it can become overwhelming, after putting it off for so long it may seem impossible. It is good to handle it before it gets out of control; but better late than never. Whether it seems overwhelming or impossible; an objective and trained Professional Organizer can reduce the stress and help you to achieve a functioning and organized space.
